The instant results seen with a digital camera has revitalized the whole photographic industry. With numerous functions they do not need the complicated mechanical components of a standard film camera. With the upsurge of home computers it means that almost anyone can store and then play with the images on their own pc. Unlike film where the image is captured on light sensitive film, these store the images as pixels that convert to computer bytes.
Many similarities exist between the two types of camera because lenses are still required to capture light just the same as a film version. All the budding digital camera enthusiast needs to know is that despite the difference in how the image is captured, the ultimate effect is the same. A charge couple device is the light capturing device in the quality models that is used to convert light into electrical signals and as far as the user is concerned, an image is saved just like an ordinary device. Some people believe the device used to capture an image in cheaper cameras the CMOS will eventually be the replacement for the better CCD but this is highly doubtful.
CCD’s are much more costly to produce than the CMOS devices, but by using the latter it has brought the cost of many models down considerably. The CCD and CMOS devices used in digital cameras capture light like tiny solar collectors both achieving the same effect but just by differing methods. Shopping for one of these types of camera can be daunting but a few tips can make all the difference. Look for models with over 6 megapixels and you won’t go far wrong as they will provide decent images; the higher the resolution of the camera the bigger the photos that can be printed.
Many people rave about a digital cameras zoom power but the image is being artificially magnified so always try for an optical zoom even if it is one with only a low magnifying power; optical zooms can produce some interesting effects. Although it shouldn’t be a problem, opt for rechargeable batteries as they can always come in handy and you don’t waste as much money on the disposable ones. Many people are just happy to point and shoot but if you want to do a little more then try to buy one with more functions; just like some of these here:
* Macro (close up shots) * Multiple exposures (on a single image) * Mosaic effect shots
High resolution cameras require more space to store images so you will probably need an additional storage card. Digital storage has come down in price so buying gigabyte card will no longer require a loan but you shouldn’t think of having anything less than this.
Cameras are now very tiny compared to a few years ago so you can actually carry around a high specification variant in your pocket and still be able to take fantastic pictures. These smaller models are very discreet and don’t make you feel as if you are on a photographic safari but you can still take professional looking pictures. I hope these few tips will help you choose a camera you enjoy using for a long time. Digital cameras are here to stay but expect even greater advancements in the future.
